Hi, every one, my car is 97 Corolla DX 1.8L . I want to change the Power Steering Fluid, since it's low maybe there has leak, but not sure what kind of fluid to use.

I check the Manual and get confuse. Is the Power Steering Fluid and the transmission fluid same thing?

"STEERING

Wheel freeplay:
Less than 30 mm (1.2 in.)

Power steering fluid type:
Automatic transmission fluid
DEXRON II or III "

I am looking at the Valvoline/MaxLife high mileage power steering fluid with stop leak, wonder is this fluid will fit my car.

Thank you.

Toyota recommends automatic transmission fluid. Many of us use ATF with great success, I specifically use Valvoline MaxLife ATF.

Speedy says otherwise. He had trouble with ATF at some point and PS fluid fixed it. He is alone.

Who you gonna choose? Speedy, or us? Peer pressure....

But seriously, the difference between ATF and PS fluid isn't very big, they're both very similar. Just go for what the factory recommends, buy some nice MaxLife and call it a day. PS fluid can be used if you so wish. I ran Royal Purple PS fluid for a while and it ran fine. Switched to bargain bin ATF, no difference. Switched to MaxLife ATF, no real difference (though I trust the longevity of brand name ATF more). Go by the manual I say.

I love Valvoline, I always use their Maxlife oil.

I almost cave in to peer pressure. HAHAHAHAHA!

Well, Today I got the PS fluid: MaxLife power steering fluid with stop leak. I didn't get the ATF.

Since I don't want to do the flush, so I got out some of the old fluid and fill it up with new PS fluid. After a few days I gonna do it again. Couple times later the fluid should be clear.
It's just an easy way for me.

If you have a leak 1st use stop leak only makes no sense in wasting power steering fluid if you have a leak 1st stop the leak cus some times you gotta empty it and put another stop leak but when you put in the stop leak run it for at least 2 days if it’s still leaking empty and put another it should stop by then and I believe Toyota uses the red but confirm with Toyota
