Which motor mount tends to go bad on a '97 1.6?

Thinking about buying a '97 Geo Prizm 1.6 that has a bad vibration that I am assuming motor mounts as the culprits. Is there one particular mount that usually goes bad and often solves most vibration issues? Or.....do I have to replace all the mounts? By the way, the vibration is not in the steering wheel.

Also, are the mounts for the '97 Geo Prizm 1.6 and the '97 Corolla 1.6 interchangeable?

I've heard only OEM Toyota/Geo mounts should be used. Are there any aftermarket mounts that do a good job, like Beck/Arnley or some other brand?

Thanks

I don't know if any are more likely to go bad than the others but odds are if you're getting a nasty vibration in the cabin it's probably the passenger side mount. Otherwise your mounts should interchange as long as the transmission on the 1.6L is the same. No one has any luck with the after market mounts, they tend to have a life span of 0-3 years. If you're on a tight budget the worst to change are the passenger side and rear (requires lowering the cross member) so absolutely make sure those are OEM if you can't afford all four. That said I thought my front would be easy, needed to save a few dollars knowing it needed transmission, and put an Anchor in thinking that if it went sooner rather than later it would take no time to replace. Really wish I hadn't, job took over an hour, was a pain in the rear trying to get the mounts in/out, and I'll probably have to do it again in a couple years.

What Cipher93 said.

Replacing the passenger side mount with a new OEM mount will take care of most if not all vibration. BUT: The other mounts are likely in as bad condition. With one good mount and 3 bad mounts, you're now pairing an eager beaver (new mount) up with 3 slackers (old mounts) asking them to carry the engine. It's only a matter of time before eager beaver will be worn out because the 3 slackers aren't doing their fair share. Replacing them in pairs at minimum, and ideally doing all 4 at the same time, is recommended.

I agree with you Speedy - the lower front and back mounts tend to show most physical damage. But the vibration? Well see that's the passenger side mount, which by the way tends to look good despite not being good.

I did 3 mounts in the same day (passenger side first, and that took away most vibration) and then the final (lower rear transmission mount) a week later since I had to cave in and have the dealership install it for me. Shifting gears became significantly smoother with the 4th mount in place. Old passenger side mount looked just fine but obviously was completely worn out given the change when installing a new mount.

My '95 geo prison had a ton of interior vibration at idle. I replaced the front, rear, and left at one time. I was SURE it was going to almost completely fix the rumbling. It made practically no difference. Sure enough, when I replaced the right one, it got VERY quiet. These folks talking about the passenger side mount being the one causing the noise are right.

Yeh the rear mount sucks. Wouldn't be surprised if the damn thing ended a few marriages  Anyway replace all of them. I went with DEA mounts, and almost 10,000 hard miles later they're still holding up great. The front and rear take the most abuse especially from shifting.

I was also recently looking into mounts. I was going to go all OEM, but I was blown away when I saw the passenger mount is $169. I can look past the others ranging from $65-90, but $170 is nuts. Anyone know where to get OEM cheaper? I was using Toyotapartsdeal.com.
