Why so many blank switches?!

I have the XSE trim hatchback, and I’ve wondered why there are so many blank switches to the left of the steering wheel?! Did Toyota put them there in case you want to install James Bond type stuff like a smokescreen or seat eject? [emoji16]

Im joking about this of course but I am curious if there is a Corolla model that uses all of those switches? [emoji3166] [emoji851]

Switches in order (right to left) should be,

RHEOSTAT LIGHT CONTROL
AUTO HIGH BEAM
Blank
STEERING HEATER
FRONT WIPER DEICER
HEATED MIRROR
Blank

There are probably a few more for autos in other countries.

HB have 5 blanks while sedan have 4 blanks.
Blank 1-4 is:
Auxiliary light
Auxiliary light
Auxiliary light
And last but not the least, more:
Auxiliary light [emoji1]
Actually, there's one unused wire behind those blanks to connect to a spare switch.
How many different auxiliary lights are needed?!! [emoji28] I can understand a button for rear fog lights on euro cars. So basically USA cars don’t get much. It’s just funny seeing only one functional switch on my car, for the Auto high beams. A trunk/hatch open button would be very useful. And Toyota could have put the fuel door opener button on that row. Oh well, I still love my car. [emoji6]

Why would you say it’s pointless? If you are exiting your car and know you want to open the hatch it could be done before you get there. [emoji846] It wouldn’t be life altering, just nice to have. I do really like that you can unlock the car and hatch by pressing the button on the hatch. Makes loading groceries and other stuff much easier.

Ok so the Auto Stop\Start is probably only on the automatics. That would explain the Sport button instead of iMT. I don’t think Toyota even has auto stop/start on Corollas in the US.

I do notice in the second picture that one of the buttons is to open the fuel door. I would like that more than the floor mounted latch.

Considering how many versions of the Corolla there are, and how many markets it’s sold in, it’s not surprising there are blank switches or in different locations. I’m glad that Toyota still uses physical buttons and switches for all of the important stuff. I would be worried if I had a Tesla that if your screen locks up for some reason, you can’t control anything. [emoji33]

It does look tacky, but that is one way automakers reduce costs when building cars (using the same parts whenever possible across all trims/models/regions). I really hate seeing covered cutouts for fog lights on trims with no fog lights, or rear bumpers clearly designed for dual exhaust (one on each side), yet only with a single exhaust on certain trims. Super tacky.

Thanks to everyone for clearing up some of the blank buttons mystery! [emoji1] Most of those features wouldn’t be useful to me personally, like the heated steering wheel, wiper deicer, and parking assist. I would like a fuel door release there, or even a hatch release. A cooled steering wheel would be nice for my location. [emoji3062]
With the Corolla being such a global car in three body styles, it makes sense that Toyota wants to use as few unique parts as possible.

Exactly, I believe it is the same shared panel with other models where all spots are needed. Here is an example from RAV4:
